At its meeting on Wednesday, the Council of Ministers approved a decision amending and supplementing the National Programme for the Prevention, Surveillance, Control and Eradication of Animal Diseases, including zoonoses for the 2022 – 2024 period. Maintaining a good health status of animals and quality of animal products is a guarantee for the well-being of humans, the free movement of animals and animal products across EU member states, as well as for smooth exports to third countries, the Government Information Service said.
Due to its geographical location, Bulgaria is constantly threatened by the spread of animal diseases and zoonoses through the continuous traffic of people, animals and vehicles through the country. This makes it necessary to maintain a permanent system of prevention and control against contagious animal diseases.
The programme identifies priority communicable diseases and zoonoses that may have a significant economic impact or pose a threat to public health, including African Swine Fever, Avian Influenza, West Nile Fever and Anthrax.
