Bulgarian customs inspectors have foiled an attempt to smuggle gold jewellery from Turkiye, the National Customs Agency said in a press release on Friday.
During a thoroughgoing customs inspection of a bus entering Bulgaria at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing at 2 a.m. on October 4, 2023, a bag belonging to passenger G.B., 44, Romanian national, was found to contain rings, ear rings, necklaces, medallions, bracelets and piercings. When tested on site, the jewellery proved to be made of 14-karat gold totalling 529.39 grammes and valued at BGN 50,292.
The smuggler was issued a written statement under the Customs Act for an attempt to carry gold jewellery across the international border without the knowledge and permission of the customs authorities.
