The harvesting of carnations has started near the Turkish city of Isparta, where the beautiful flower is one of the main agricultural crops. Hundreds of acres of dianthus grown in greenhouses serve as the main source of livelihood for most of the 2,500 people living in the village of Deregumu near Isparta.

The annual output is around 200 million dianthus stalks of 15 different varieties, which get exported to Bulgaria, the Netherlands, Great Britain and Romania, as well as sold on the domestic market.

A local farmer shared that planting begins in February. Harvesting comes four months later. The flowers are divided according to their variety. The summer varieties are planted separately from the winter ones, so that dianthus are available every season.

This season, the Turkish farmers expect better profit due to the higher flower prices on the European markets.
