Sofia University Offers New Bachelor's Degree in Hebrew Studies

Sofia, April 1 (BTA) - The Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski
offers a new Bachelor's Degree in Hebrew Studies, which is
interdisciplinary and covers Hebrew, Israel's history and
economy, said on Tuesday the University's Vice-Rector of
Education Milena Stefanova at a news conference.

She explained that the new degree's main purpose is to prepare
experts on the development of the Middle East, who will acquire
knowledge about the State of Israel and the history of the
Jewish people.

The programme will be under the Sofia University's Faculty of
History and will be managed by a programme council, chaired by
Prof. Hristo Matanov.

The Hebrew Studies Degree will be studied in three modules. The
first one is linguistic and will focus on the official language
of Israel - Hebrew. The second module will be historical and the
third module will cover the economy of Israel, which is
characterized by a fast-growing market economy and high
technologies, Prof. Matanov explained.

He noted that the programme will develop in cooperation with two
Israeli universities - in Jerusalem and Haifa, which will help
with the selection of appropriate Hebrew textbooks.

Thirty freshmen will be accepted into the new programme, which
will receive assistance by the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry. The
annual tuition fees will be 500 leva.
