Bulgaria Has Never Lost 80,000 People Annually to Natural Movement of Population, Even from Total Population Growth - Statistics

Sofia, June 25 (BTA) - Bulgaria has never lost 80,000 people
annually to natural movement of population, even from the total
population growth, Corresponding Member Professor Atanas
Atanassov said during an international scientific conference
entitled, "Modern Statistics: New Challenges for Development"
taking place in Sofia. The event also marks the 125th
anniversary of Bulgarian statistics. Atanassov's statement was
prompted by findings of the Centre for Demographic Policy
claiming such rates of population loss.

In an address to the participants in the conference National
Statistical Institute (NSI) Chairman Sergei Tsvetarski said that
trust is one of the priorities in NSI's work and that the NCI
Code of Practice provides guarantees for objectivity of the
statistical information and for the absence of lobbyist or other
interests.

Tsvetarski said that the regional units of the NSI will be
consolidated to correspond to the six planning regions. NSI also
plans to set up a research institute of statistics.

The NSI Chairman said there are no intentions to lay off people
working in statistics but rather to make better use of their
skills.
