PM Borissov Tells of Very Difficult Talks between EU, Turkey

Brussels, March 8 (BTA correspondent Nickolay Zheliazkov) - Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov described as "very difficult" the talks between the EU heads of state and government with Turkey that ended Monday night in Brussels. "Much of what we had hoped to achieve, was achieved: we reached a compromise between the European countries and Turkey. Many are unhappy but nothing better can be done at this moment," he commented for Bulgarian reporters after the talks.

It also transpired from his remarks that Bulgaria has asked financing "because it is making a huge effort and shows how the Schengen border is to be protected". According to him, all his counterparts agreed that Bulgaria is a model to be followed in terms of border security at the moment.

Borissov also underscored the agreement that was reached for liberalization of the visa regime with Turkey and its inclusion in the "safe countries" list, as well as the compromise for expanding the membership talks with Turkey and opening more negotiating chapters.
