BSP-Left Bulgaria Urges President to Convene Meeting on Demographic Crisis

Sofia, March 8 (BTA) - The BSP-Left Bulgaria parliamentary group on Tuesday urged President Rosen Plevneliev to convene the Consultative Council on National Security in order to discuss the demographic crisis. The group's Floor Leader Mihail Mikov said this is a very important issue because the demographic crisis has become even worse this year.

The meeting was part of the President's annual political consultations with the parliamentary parties.

Mikov said his group has provided Plevneliev with relevant data and its request was met with understanding. "The outlook is disastrous for the Bulgarian nation. The government must take clear, concrete, efficient and urgent measures over the short term, supported with the necessary funding. To increase child-rearing benefits is the least that can be done," he said.

The Socialists also expressed their concern about other problems related to the government's rightist policies. Mikov said the stability of the ruling coalition rests on simple arithmetics rather than an effort to fulfill election promises. He predicted that politics will become increasingly ousted by the hunt for votes this year. "This implies instability for Bulgaria," he warned.
