Prosecutor General Tsatsarov: Media Owners' Interests Poison Bulgarian Media Climate, Politics and Business

Brussels, March 17 (BTA correspondent Nikolay Jeliazkov) - The interests of media owners are poisoning the Bulgarian media climate, politics and business. Free media and journalists are among the greatest achievements of the normal world, Prosecutor General Sotir Tsatsarov told Bulgarian journalists here on Wednesday. He was in Brussels to attend a discussion about the future of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism reports, organized by the European Parliament.

Tsatsarov said he believes that every website must provide the possibility to identify the people who leave comments after an article, so that in case a person feels wronged, they can hold the publisher liable. Bulgarian media have been poisoned by the oligarchs, who own part of them, not the prosecuting magistracy, he added.

Some of the media in Bulgaria have been poisoned by the fact that they are forced to uphold the political and economic interests of their owners, "be it Delyan Peevski, Tsvetan Vassilev back in the day, or Delyan Peevski and Ivo Prokopiev right now. This is the poison in the Bulgarian media," Tsatsarov said.

According to him, if a media is not poisoned, it is due to the fact that some of them give freedom to "those holding the microphones". "I am not the person to point out the free media, every unbiased look at websites and newspapers will reveal whose interests are upheld by whom," Tsatsarov said, answering a question.
