PM Borissov, Macedonian President Ivanov Discuss Migrant Issue

Sofia, March 17 (BTA) - Prime Minister Boyko Borissov talked over the phone with Macedonian President Gjorge Ivanov on Thursday. The two discussed the acute problem with the refugees and the possibility to intercept the channels for illegal trafficking of migrants along the common border, the Cabinet's press service said.

The two agreed to hold joint air and land operations for guarding and control of the common border in the following days as a preventive measure.

Borissov voiced concern for the situation in the Western Balkans in the context of the refugee crisis adding that the Government is preparing humanitarian aid for the refugees in the Republic of Macedonia. He recalled that such aid has already been sent to Greece.

Borissov stressed again that the efficient control of the EU external borders, which are not confined to the Schengen Area only, is of primary importance to contain migration. He noted that solidarity and coordination among all member states are needed to resolve the problem as the countries, which should assume the highest responsibilities for border guarding, should receive the greatest support.
