Per Capita Beer Consumption at 73.4 L in 2015

Sofia, July 19 (BTA) - In 2015, per capita beer consumption increased to 73.5 l, said Ivana Radomirova, Executive Director of the Union of Brewers in Bulgaria at a news conference marking the union's 25th anniversary. She said that the average per capita beer consumption was 72 litres over the past five years.

Bulgaria ranks next to countries such as Belgium and the Netherlands and is ahead of the UK but lags behind the Czech Republic and Germany with an annual per capita consumption of 144 l and 107 l respectively.

Men drink beer 12 times a month and women five times.

Radomirova said that over the past five years the brewers have released over 42 new beer brands and 102 types of new packaging. In the past year, non-pasteurized and non-filtered beer has become popular on the market

In the past 12 to 18 months a slight drop has been observed in sales of beer in plastic packaging. Glass packaging has marked an increase of 23 per cent, cans of 11 per cent and draft beer of 5.5 per cent. Beer sales in pubs and restaurants increased by 22 per cent.

In 2015, brewers reported an increase of 2 per cent in sales from an year earlier.
