BSP, ABV, Independent MPs Petition Constitutional Court on Election of Financial Supervision Commission Chair
Sofia, July 21 (BTA) - BSP-Left Bulgaria, ABV and independent MPs Velizar Enchev and Georgi Kadiev challenged before the Constitutional Court a Parliament decision on the adoption of procedural rights for nominating candidates for Chair of the Financial Supervision Commission (FSC), the press centre of the Bulgarian Socialist Party said on Thursday.
Last Friday, the National Assembly started a procedure to elect a new FSC chairperson. Parliamentary groups and individual MPs have five days to nominate candidates for the job in written proposals to the Budget and Finance Committee. The legislature then voted 108-39, with 28 abstentions, to approve the rules of the nomination procedure. The opposition asked why the incumbents were in a hurry with the election and objected to the reduction of the nomination period from 14 to five days.
By the expiry of the deadline, the only nomination put forward was that of Deputy Finance Minister Karina Karaivanova, proposed by the GERB parliamentary group.
It has become necessary to elect a new FSC chairperson because the term of the most recent holder of the post, Stoyan Mavrodiev, expired on June 18.
