US Department of Homeland Security Praises Information Sharing with Bulgaria

Washington/Sofia, July 22 (BTA) - Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Roumyana Buchvarova held a working meeting with the political leadership of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on July 21, several days into her working visit to the United States, the Interior Ministry said.

Buchvarova and DHS Assistant Secretary for International Affairs Alan Bersin discussed the implementation of three fundamental agreements between Sofia and Washington on the sharing of security and law enforcement information. The three agreements - on combating serious organized crime, monitoring terrorism, and exchanging information on travellers - were described by Bersin as a very good framework for effective bilateral exchange of operative data. Bersin said this is a key element of the joint fight against terrorism and organized crime.

Buchvarova updated her hosts about the security measures in Bulgaria after the recent terrorist attacks in Europe and the measures in the field of border security, migration control and the fight against smuggling in migrants. For their part, the DHS leaders vowed to continue contributing to the training of Bulgarian Interior Ministry experts in the field of border protection and cyber security.
