Mister and Missis Economics Awards Presented in Sofia

Sofia, December 1 (BTA) - Ognyan Donev, Board Chairman and Executive Director of pharmaceuticals supplier Sopharma, received the 2016 Mister Economics Award after a poll conducted by the Confederation of Employers and Industrialists in Bulgaria. The Missis Economics Award went to Svetla Lessova, Executive Director of the snacks company Mondelez Bulgaria.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov greeted the participants in the award ceremony which was held in Sofia on November 30. Alluding to politicians' calls for a substantial increase of the minimum pension and the refusal of his GERB party to support such a move, Borissov said: "We will remain champions of stability and will not succumb to the general madness, no matter how fashionable it may be, because you, as employers, know that you can afford a pay rise only when you see that your company is stable and growing and has contracts. The same applies to the government."

The Prime Minister went on to say: "There is hardly anyone who would not want to see pensions going as high as possible." He noted that the national economy has grown over the last three months, but it remains to be seen whether the trend will persist, so there is no need to rush things.

He said populism has plagued Bulgaria. "Politicians can talk all they want, but sooner or later they will align themselves with the system, because it is easy to talk when you are outside, but it is quite a different thing to sit down together with employers, trade unions and other organizations and negotiate on the rules," Borissov said.
