Food Market Index Continues to Edge Up Before Christmas

Sofia, December 19 (BTA) - In the week leading to December 19, the food wholesale market index rose by 0.79 per cent to 1.399 points, the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets reported. On November 11, the index stood at 1.288 points, growing by 8.6 per cent in a month. Compared with December 18 2015, the index is by 2.9 per cent higher. The baseline index value of 1.000 points dates from 2005.

During the week in review, the average wholesale price of local greenhouse-grown tomatoes increased by 0.6 per cent to 1.78 leva per kilogramme. Imported tomatoes traded at 1.29 lv/kg. Local greenhouse-grown cucumbers rose by 1.7 per cent to 2.75 lv/kg. Potatoes went down by 8.7 per cent to 0.63 lv/kg. Carrots fell by 5.1 per cent to 0.75 lv/kg. Cabbage was traded at 0.51 lv/kg.

The average wholesale price of apples was at 1.15 lv/kg. Lemons edged up by 2.7 per cent to 1.91 lv/kg. Oranges went down by 6.3 per cent to 1.19 lv/kg. Tangerines traded at 1.27 lv/kg and bananas at 2.08 lv/kg.

White brined cheese from cow's milk rose by 1.1 per cent to 5.56 lv/kg. Yellow kashkaval cheese of the Vitosha type was traded at 10.03 lv/kg, and sunflower oil at 2.01 leva per litre. The price of kaima minced meat remained at 4.63 lv/kg. Frozen chicken was traded at 3.83 lv/kg. Sugar sold at 1.54 lv/kg. Flour, type 500, remained at 0.82 lv/kg. Dry common beans sold at 3.31 lv/kg. Eggs traded at 0.19 lv/pc.
