Pink Flamingo Population Increasing in Bourgas Lake

Bourgas, on the Black Sea, March 21 (BTA) - The population of pink flamigoes in the Atanassovsko Lake near the Black Sea city of Bourgas has increased to 13, which is all-times high for the region, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) said. Long years of observation so far have not registered such numbers in the lagoon.

Just two weeks ago, seven flamingoes were spotted. Now their number has doubled. Another five were observed in the Poda protected area, rounding off the total number to 18.

Flamingoes have been living near Bourgas for about three years thanks to the good conditions of the wetlands, said Vladimir Mladenov of BSPB. They are currently expanding their habitat and numbers, spreading farther northward than usual.

The closest nesting cites of pink flamingoes are in Turkey and Greece.

Flamingoes have also been observed in Romania, Mladenov said.

Atanassovsko Lake also provides a feeding ground for hundreds of other bird species.
