Leadership of Right-wing Union of Democratic Forces Resigns after Election Loss

Sofia, March 28 (BTA) - The whole leadership of the Right-wing Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) stepped down on Tuesday in the wake of the poor performance in the March 26 elections of its Reformist Bloc coalition. The decision was announced to BTA by UDF leader Bozhidar Loukarski.

The Reformist Bloc won 3.06 per cent in the elections, staying well below the 4 per cent barrier for entry in the legislature.

The resignations of the leadership will be submitted before the party's National Council on April 4.

Loukarski has not decided whether or not he will run for the UDF leadership again.

A meeting of the coordination board of the Reformist Bloc on Wednesday will consider whether the coalition will keep its present format.

Loukarski is not aware whether the leaders of the other Reformist Bloc parties plan to resign.

He said that the results from the elections show that 300,000 Right-wing voters will be without representation in the next Parliament. "Clearly, the Right wing needs consolidation processes," he added.

He said that all parties in the Reformist Bloc share the blame for this poor result.
