South African Embassy to Mark Nelson Mandela Day with 67 Minutes of Community Service

Sofia, July 17 (BTA) - The Embassy of the Republic of South Africa issued a press release on Monday, saying that it will again celebrate International Mandela Day by undertaking 67 minutes of community service on the former President's birthday, 18 July. The 67 minutes symbolise 67 years of uninterrupted and selfless service to the people of South Africa and the world since Mandela joined the African National Congress in 1942.

The Nelson Mandela International Day marked in honour of the world icon and late President Nelson Mandela, will this year be observed under the theme #ActionAgainstPoverty and so the South African Embassy in Sofia is going to use Mandela Day to intensify the fight against poverty. On 18 July our Embassy will visit Father Ivan's Home for Orphans in the village of Novi Han and help with a project they have. Further to that, later on, in September, the Embassy will donate foodstuff to the needy in the poor region of Montana (northwestern Bulgaria). That is where anyone can help by sending the Embassy packaged foods deemed suitable, which we will then donate to those in need in Montana region. "Should you decide to join us in this initiative kindly send the products you have to our Embassy at 7, Shipka street, Sofia by 31 August 2017," the press release says.

"Mandela Day was created to inspire people to embrace Mr Mandela's values and make an imprint through service to their communities. The UN has confirmed that July 18th, Mandela day is an annual national, a continental, a global call to action: Recognise the power within you to make a difference, to change the world around you," the Embassy says.

The Government of the Republic of South Africa and the people of South Africa are urging people all over the world to join them in an annual celebration of Nelson Mandela's life.
