African Swine Fever
Case Confirmed
in Northeast Bulgaria

Sofia, October 24 (BTA) - The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) confirmed the first case of African swine fever in wild boar near the northeastern village of Kaynardja, Silistra region, the Agency reported Wednesday. The dead animal was discovered near the wire fence put up along the border with Romania, in which it got tangled while trying to cross into Bulgaria. It tested positive for African swine fever, after which the carcass was properly disposed of. The fence has served its functions.

Domestic pigs will be constantly tested for the disease, while samples will be taken from all dead animals or such exhibiting symptoms, which is part of Bulgaria's African swine fever prophylaxis and monitoring programme.

So far, the disease has been confirmed in nine EU member states, including Bulgaria and Romania. LI/MY
