Vice President Iotova
Meets with Bulgarian-Kazakh
Chamber of Commerce Representatives

Sofia, December 13 (BTA) - Bulgarian Vice President Iliyana Iotova conferred with representatives of the Bulgarian-Kazakh Chamber of Commerce here on Thursday. On behalf of the Bulgarian Ethno-Cultural Centre Zlata in Astana, they informed Iotova of the Bulgarian community in Kazakhstan's wish to be in a closer contact with Bulgaria, the President's Press Secretariat reported.

A letter from the Bulgarian community sent to Iotova reads: "We ask you to support us in becoming part of the modern cultural dialogue between Bulgarian communities worldwide, which is organized by you."

The community has been neglected by the Bulgarian government and is not featured in the National Strategy for Bulgarians Abroad, which was adopted in 2014.

Bulgarians, whose roots can be traced to Besserabia, started migrating to Kazakhstan over 120 years ago. There are five Bulgarian cultural centres there, including a weekend school teaching Bulgarian.

The community bears the statute of a national minority and is held in high respect. RI/TH
