Two Defence Information Service Chiefs
Charged with Leaking
Classified Information

Sofia, July 8 (BTA) - The Military District Prosecution Office in Sofia has charged the former and the current chiefs of the Defence Information Service with malfeasance in office. The investigation was initiated following a check by the State Agency for National Security and a subsequent alert to the Prosecutor General.

Between April 2016 a May 2019, 504 authorizations for access to information classified as secret and top secret were issued in violation of the Classified Information Protection Act. They were issued by an information security officer and not by the chief of the service, which gave unauthorized access to secret NATO and EU information to 504 persons.

Also, the investigation has collected evidence for misuse of financial resources and violations of the Public Procurement Act at the service after a SANS alert. The Public Financial Inspection Agency will carry out an inspection whose results are pending. RY/PP
