PM: No Sunrises from Turkish Border Expected, Greek Border Is Critical Spot Now

Yambol, March 27 (BTA) - "At present we do not expect surprises from [the border with] Turkey; now the critical spot for the migrant flow is at the Greek border," Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said adding that assistance will be provided to the military to create readiness for the building of a Bruno fence. He was speaking at a ceremony on the inauguration of the upgraded Bezmer aviation base.

Borissov said further he is against the building of a fence between Bulgaria and another EU member state but noted that in the meantime "people expect from us to protect our border".

The upgraded airport may be used by the civil aviation in case of emergencies and bad weather, the Prime Minister also said.

The runway has been extended up to 3,000 metres and a cargo terminal has been built. In this way, the airport becomes fully interoperable with the NATO facilities, Defence Minister Nikolai Nenchev said. He added that the upgraded facility will make it possible for Bulgaria to participate in rescue missions.

Asked about the investment made, Nenchev replied that the upgrading projects have been financed under the NATO Security Investment Programme 2014-2016. The modernization cost around 62 million leva, of which 7,387,000 leva provided by the Defence Ministry.
