Angry Prosecutor General Withdraws Proposal for Financial and Personnel Support to Judicial  Authorities in Migration-Afflicted Border Areas

Sofia, June 23 (BTA) - An angry Prosecutor General Sotir Tsatsarov withrew Thursday his proposal to the Plenum of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) for providing urgent financial and personnel support to prosecution offices and courts in migration-afflicted border areas. He did so after slamming fellow SJC member Sonya Naydenova who argued that this should be a decision made seperately by the two SJC colleges, of prosecutors and of judges, rather than by the SJC Plenum.

A couple of days ago Tsatsarov said that the migratory pressure along Bulgaria's southern border with Turkey and Greece has burdened some regional prosecution offices and courts with unusually large numbers of criminal cases, and proposed establishing a workgroup in the SJC Plenum to analyze the workload of the judiciary in such areas and see what resources are available to support them.

Naydenova opposed the proposal Thursday saying that official figures show the migrant flow into Bulgaria to have contracted by 20 per cent in the first quarter of 2016.

Tsatsarov commented that Naydenova's problem was that the proposal came from him and that she had "a personal and family-related" motive to say that the Prosecutor General was interfering in the work of lawcourts.

It was not immediately clear what that motive was.

After his remarks Tsatsarov announced that he was withdrawing his proposal and left the SJC meeting with a door slam.

Naydenova said it is regretful that Tsatsarov brings his personal dislikes to the SJC.

Sofia City Court President Kalin Kalpakchiev said the Prosecutor General's behaviour was inadmissible.
