Wild Fire Situation in Southeast Remains Complicated

Haskovo/Stara Zagora, Southeast Bulgaria, September 1 (BTA) - The wildfire between the southeastern villages of Bulgarska Polyana, Cherepovo and Glavan has been contained, said the spokesperson of the regional task force Neli Vulkanova. The fire, which started on Tuesday, has destroyed an area of 1,200 ha, 900 of which are deciduous and coniferous forests.

The local residents are no longer at risk. The 50 residents of Bulgarska Polyana, who were evacuated Wednesday evening, have returned to their homes.

Another wildfire has started between the nearby village of Mudrets and Glavan on Wednesday afternoon, the Stara Zagora Regional Fire Safety and Civil Protection Directorate told BTA.

The fire has engulfed over 200 ha and continues to spread. Thirty servicemen have joined the rescue teams on Thursday morning. Dry grass is burning over a rough terrain, which impedes the fire-fighting efforts.

The Mayor of Gulubovo Municipality declared a state of emergency in the village of Glavan. The flames have reached the outermost houses, but the firefighters managed to save the building.
