Medical Checks in Refugee Accommodation Facility Do Not Establish Mass Infectious Disease Outbreak

Sofia, November 22 (BTA) - Medical checks performed among refugees accommodated at the facility in the Southern town of Harmanli on November 18 and 19 did not establish an outbreak of a mass infectious disease, the Health Ministry said in a press release Tuesday.

A total of 128 ill refugees were examined: 91 men, 16 women and 21 children, of whom 106 Afghanis, 12 Syrian nationals, eight nationals of Iraq and one Iranian.

The diagnosed conditions were pyoderma (36 people), scabies (26 people), chicken pox (18 people, all of them children under 8 years of age), acute viral infection (15 people) and eczema (16 people).

One person was diagnosed with skin leishmaniosis, which the specialists said did not constitute an epidemiological risk.

The incidence of scabies and the ensuing complications are mainly due to the unwillingness of the refugees to cooperate in the efforts of the authorities in the facility. Proper measures have been identified with the director of the facility to avert outbreaks of infectious diseases.
