Laos Seeks to Cooperate with Bulgaria in Environment Field

Sofia, December 2 (BTA) - Deputy Environment Minister Atanaska Nikolova and Sommad Pholsena, Lao Minister of Natural Resources and Environment on Thursday discussed possibilities to sign a cooperation memorandum in the field of environment. The meeting took place in Rousse, on the Danube, within the Fifth ASEM Sustainable Development Dialogue (the Danube-Mekong cooperation initiative). The agenda was dominated by water nexus in the third ASEM decade.

Bulgaria is an active participant in the Asia-Europe Partnership and such platforms for cooperation have a large significance for the experience exchange and the sustainable development of countries, said Deputy Minister Nikolova. This year the annual forum focuses on environmental protection and green growth.

The sustaianable development of water resources is a key factor in improving the quality of life of people and the balanced social and economic development of regions, said Nikolova. She familiarized delegates with the success of the international cooperation in Danube management.

The seminar which will be on until December 3 is organized by the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry, the Bulgarian Environment Ministry, the Rousse University, the European External Action Service and the European Commission. Participating are representatives of six European and eight Asian countries.

The initiative aims to boost interregional cooperation between Asia and Europe. On the agenda of the forum are water nexus, green growth, water resources, alimentation and transnational zones.
