Koprivshtitsa Folk Festival Selected for UNESCO's Register of Best Safeguarding Practices

Sofia, December 2 (BTA) - The Folklore Festival in Koprivshtitsa has been selected for UNESCO's register of best safeguarding practices, said the Culture Ministry on Friday. This happened during the 11th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Adis Abeba, Ethiopia.

The candidacy was submitted to the UNESCO Secretariat with a special proposal for consideration by the Bulgarian Culture Minister.

The folklore festival in Koprivshtitsa was launched in 1965 to showcase the authentic Bulgarian folklore. During the years the festival has established itself as a movement for preserving and popularizing Bulgarian traditional culture known today as intangible cultural heritage.

The eleventh festival in 2015 marked its fiftieth anniversary and was held under the auspices of UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova.
