President Plevneliev: "Our Problems Today Are Rooted in Missed Opportunities in Education"

Sofia, December 6 (BTA) - Adressing a ceremony for presentation of the prizes of the annual edition of the Bulgarian Universities Rating at a ceremony on Monday evening, President Rosen Plevneliev said that the present-day problems are rooted in missed opportunities in education. "Terrorism, a misunderstood nationalism and populism find breeding ground where education has failed," he said to an audience including the rectors of the best Bulgarian universities and senior representatives of the executive branch of power.

He said that investment in education must remain a strategic priority for this country.

Plevneliev believes that having a reliable university rating system is a national cause and the results from its work are visible. "The rating system creates healthy competition among universities. It is a platform which allows every young person exercise his or her right to choose."

The Head of State spoke about some major steps that have been made in the recent years in the field of education. He singled out the phasing in of dual education of learning while working and said it is helping deal with a mis-match between education and the labour market needs.

In the 2016 edition of the ceremony, the St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia won the special prize that goes to the university with the highest number of top-rating programmes.
