BTA Presents 60 Years Bulgaria in UNESCO Exhibition

Sofia, March 16 (BTA) - An exhibition consisting of around 150 photographs from BTA's archives, which track Bulgaria's 60 year history in the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), will be displayed between March 20 and 26 at the central lobby of the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia. The exhibition's official opening will be at 6:00 on March 23.

The oldest photograph is of UNESCO Director General Luther Harris Evans's visit to Bulgaria back in 1956, while the latest images are from the Global Women Leaders' Forum, held in Sofia last May, and attended by the Organization's current Director General, Irina Bokova. The exhibition depicts a small fraction of the work and commitment of thousands of people to building Bulgaria's image in UNESCO and before the world, and creating bridges of dialogue by means of culture and by sharing cultural values.

The exhibition features photographs of Bulgarian monuments included on UNESCO's lists, authored by Ivo Hadjimishev, who is also its curator.

The event is organized with support from the Foreign Ministry's National Commission for UNESCO-Bulgaria and Sofia University, which is hosting it.

The exhibition will be on display at the National Academy of Art's Academia Gallery between March 28 and April 3, 2017.

Bulgaria joins UNESCO on May 17, 1956. Its membership in the largest UN organization - the Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, is marked by the development of active dialogue and useful cooperation, of shared values for peace, humanism and tolerance, and by the people's, and subsequently the states' readiness to work together for the overall cultural enrichment of peoples.

Bulgaria is proud of Ms. Irina Bokova's election to the post of UNESCO Director General. Contributing to our national pride are also the Bulgarian sites of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, including the Boyana Church, the Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo, the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, the Madara Rider, the Ancient City of Nessebar, the Rila Monastery, the Thracian Tomb of Sveshtari, the Pirin National Park, the Srebarna Nature Reserve, the Bistritsa Babi vocal ensemble, the Nestinarstvo fire-dancing rite, the Chiprovtsi carpet-making tradition, the Surova folk feast and the National Folklore Festival in Koprivshtitsa.
