Mining and Quarrying Industry Generates More than 2.9 Billion Leva Annually in Additional Impact to Economy

Sofia, March 17 (BTA) - The additional impact on the economy generated by the mining and quarrying industry amounts to more than 2.9 billion leva annually according to data from 2015, Governing Partner in the Industry Watch Bulgaria think thank Luchezar Bogdanov said Friday, presenting an analysis of the social and economic impact of the mining and quarrying industry.

The total output of the industry in 2015 stood at 2.3 billion leva. The aggregate value added exceeded 1.1 billion leva. Exports of mineral resources and concentrates too amounted to 1.1 billion leva. A total of 24,000 people work in the industry. The average wage there is 1,435 leva.

Ore mining has the leading role in the industry with proceeds of 638 million euro, followed by coal mining with 382 million euro. Exports are strong in ore mining while coal is sold on the domestic market.

The industry generates 3 per cent value added in the economy, has a share of three per cent in the wages paid in Bulgaria, accounts for 1.3 per cent of the total employment, and generates two per cent of the production output in the economy.
