Dimiter Glavchev Remains
Chairman of
National Assembly

Sofia, June 1 (BTA) - GERB's Dimiter Glavchev will remain Chairman of the National Assembly. With 118 votes "against," the parliamentary majority rejected his resignation demanded by BSP For Bulgaria. GERB and United Patriots MP voted against. A total of 114 MPs of BSP For Bulgaria, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, and Volya voted in favour.

BSP For Bulgaria declared that Parliament has not been functioning for six weeks now, the government does not have a governance programme, and the Chairman of Parliament tolerates hate speak.

BSP For Bulgaria had demanded Glavchev's resignation for "systematic abuse of power and failing in his duties." Socialist leader Kornelia Ninova accused Glavchev of blatantly violating the National Assembly's rules, failing in his duties and becoming a medium of hate speech, of division and scandals which she said GERB are imposing on the public.

"The parliamentary group of GERB will stand firmly behind Glavchev because he has exceptional erudition, he is a good professional and allows everyone to express opinions at the Chairmanship Council meetings," GERB Floor Leader Tsvetan Tsvetanov said during the debate.

"We want to serve out the full four-year term of the government because Bulgaria needs that, because we have a pending European presidency, and because we are responsible," Tsvetanov pointed out. In his words, if the opposition continues with such actions, they will not be productive.

In response, Ninova pointed out that there is no way in which BSP and GERB would differ politically and ideologically before the elections and then perform together. "We remain different and we are an alternative, but here we should be together, because the issue is Bulgaria," she added. Ninova also noted that they were ready to help with anything for the European presidency, providing the priorities were outlined in plenary.

The debates on the demand largely focused on this country's communist past and exchanges of personal attacks./PK/BR
