Sofia Hosts 2nd International Western Silk Road Workshop

Sofia, June 27 (BTA) - A two-day 2nd International Western Silk Road Workshop opened here on Tuesday. It is part of the Western Silk Road Tourism Development Initiative, aimed at revitalising the Silk Road heritage located throughout Europe. The initiative is part of the Enhancing the Understanding of European Tourism project of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the European Commission Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs.

"Bulgaria can arrange joint tourism packages with the countries involved in the Western Silk Road Tourism Development Initiative," Bulgarian Tourism Minister Nikolina Angelkova, who is attending the event, told journalists. She specified that the UNWTO is promoting such joint packages, which may be an additional help to Bulgaria.

"The Western Silk Road is exceedingly important for the promotion of this country's cultural and historical heritage," she said, adding that more than 40,000 artefacts have been discovered in Bulgaria so far, ranking us third after Greece and Italy.

"Part of the initiatives that are to be implemented along the Western Silk Road are included in the register of tourist attractions that we established last year and in the online platform 'I Love Bulgaria'," the Tourism Minister pointed out.
