Sofia, August 14 (BTA) - Sofia Airport posted a nearly 34 per cent increase in passengers this last July compared to a year earlier.

There was a record large 42 per cent year-on-year increase in passengers between January and July when the airport handled 3,747,596 passengers, its press office said.

In July alone, Sofia Airport handled more than 611,000 passengers, with 65 per cent of them going through Terminal 2 and the rest through Terminal 1.

Passengers on regular international flights increased by 33 per cent on year. The number of passengers on domestic flights rose by 57 per cent due to interest in the Black Sea resorts at the height of the season. Charter flights increased by 12 per cent in July on year.

The airport handled 5,219 landings and take-offs in July, nearly 10 per cent more than a year earlier. The increase was mostly due to regular international flights.

A total of 1,771 tonnes of cargo and postal shipments were handled in July, of which 58 per cent were flown by cargo aircraft and the rest by passenger planes.
