of Historic World Chess Championship
Match in Buenos Aires Opens in Sofia
Sofia, October 25 (BTA) - An exhibition entitled "Crown" including 36 paintings and miniatures from the "chess series" by artist Roman Gumanyuk can be seen at Sofia's LIK Gallery. The event is organized by the Blitz Chess Club in Sofia and LIK Gallery under the patronage of the Embassy of the Republic of Argentina in Bulgaria, the organisers said.
The World Chess Championship match between the legendary chess players Alexander Alekhine and Jose Raul Capablanca began in Buenos Aires in September 1927. The match lasted more than two months and was finally won by Alekhine.
The portraits of the two players are in the centre of the exposition. Gumanyuk recreated them during the 11th game of the famous match. A feature of this combination of the two pictures is that they can be displayed independently as portraits of the two chess legends. However, united in one composition, they give an overall picture of what is happening and the game's atmosphere of tension.
Also featured in the exhibition is a collection of miniature paintings by Gumanyuk on the subject of chess. Their size does not exceed 4x4 inches.
This is not the artist's first exhibition dedicated to chess. In December 2014, the Kyrgyz National Museum of Fine Arts with the support of the local Chess Federation hosted his solo exhibition entitled "Alchemy, East and Chess". Gumanyuk also conducted several chess-themed exhibitions in Bulgaria, the last of which was held in the southeastern town of Haskovo in March 2017.
Roman Gumanyuk was born in 1985. The artist works in various genres and techniques. He has had 29 solo exhibitions, with his works having been presented in museums and galleries in Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Bulgaria, France, the USA, and Italy. The author is a member of the VI Florence Biennale of Contemporary Art. Private collectors and connoisseurs of art from different countries around the world have his works in their collections.
