site.bta6th Century BC Aryballoi Exhibit of the Month for January of National Archaeological Museum

Two Corinthian and one Attic aryballoi (vases commonly used as scent or oil bottles) are the exhibit of the month for January of the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NAIM-BAS), the museum said on its website. 

The exhibits are part of the exhibition titiled Trebenishte, 105 Years Since the Discovery of the Necropolis at Trebenishte. 1918 – 2023, which is on display in the museum until March 24, 2024. 

The globular vessels are dated to the late 6th century BC. 

The Corinthian aryballoi have one handle each. They are made of faience with a relief decoration of pagan ornaments. Similar decoration is seen in vessels discovered on the Greek island of Rhodes and in Lazio, Central Italy.

The Attic aryballos is made of glass. It has two handles made of dark blue glass, embellished with yellow and light blue stripes.

Similar glass vessels as the ones found in the Trebenishte necropolis can be seen in graves in the Gulf of Thermai dating back to the Archaic period.
