Semen Novikov won the first gold medal for Bulgaria at the Paris Olympics, defeating Iran's Alireza Mohmadipiani in the men's 87kg Greco-Roman wrestling final on Thursday. The 26-year-old won on 7-0 points.
This is the first wrestling title for Bulgaria in 24 years.
Bulgarian President Rumen Radev wrote on Facebook: "It was a real pleasure for me to congratulate Semen Novikov just a few minutes ago for his resounding victory in the 87kg Greco-Roman final at the Olympics! Bulgaria deservedly won its first gold medal at the Paris Olympics!"
Ukraine's Zhan Beleniuk and Denmark's Turpal Ali Bisultanov took bronze.
