Bulgaria's Plamena Mitkova placed 19th in the women's long jump qualification at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday and failed to go to the final.
The 19-year-old, who was having her Olympic debut, recorded a best attempt of 6.45 m in the qualification, which she achieved in her first jump. She made two other successful attempts of 6.42 m and 6.33 m, respectively, which was not enough for a slot in the final.
A world under-20 champion from Cali 2022, Mitkova has a personal best of 6.97 m, which she recorded in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria on July 30, but in Paris she remained far below that mark.
Only four athletes surpassed the qualifying standard of 6.75 m, with world vice champion Tara Davis-Woodhall (US) scoring the best result of 6.90 m. Defending Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo (Germany), who is also two-time world champion and reigning European champion, also exceeded the qualifying standard by jumping 6.86 m. Among the 12 athletes who qualified for the final, Hilary Kpatcha, representing the host country France, recorded the lowest result of 6.59 m.
The final will be held on August 8.
