Bulgarian boxer Kubrat Pulev will fight German Mahmoud Charr, previously known as Manuel Charr, for the WBA (World Boxing Association) regular heavyweight title in Sofia on March 30, the two athletes said at a joint press conference in the Bulgarian capital on Thursday.
The heavyweight boxing match will take place in Arena Sofia. This WBA Regular Heavyweight Title was recently introduced by the WBA and allows to have more than one world champion. Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk currently holds the WBA Super Heavyweight Title, which he will stake in the upcoming unification bout with Britain's Tyson Fury.
"I will be facing a very serious opponent who, like me, has a lot of experience," said Pulev.
"This is the chance of my life and Kubrat's life. I have been working as a promoter for 30 years and I have always wanted to get to this world title fight in Sofia," added the Pulev's manager Ivaylo Gotsev.
"I am a fighter. I do not fight for money, I fight to leave a legacy. If you only fight for money, you are lost. (...) Work hard and one day you will get everything you have dreamed of," Charr said.
Kubrat Pulev's younger brother Tervel will also be part of the gala. His opponent is still unknown, but is expected to be announced soon.
"The WBA [regular] world title has been confirmed by the organization. We are now awaiting the appointment of the refereeing team for the match. We all realize how big the opportunity of this fight is for both Mr. Char and Mr. Pulev, especially with the upcoming heavyweight fights of Anthony Joshua on March 8 and the match between Usyk and Fury in the near future," said WBA Europe President Mariana Borissova, who is the most high-profile Bulgarian in professional boxing at world level.
In the professional ring, 42-year-old Kubrat Pulev has 30 wins (14 by knockout) in 33 fights. The 39-year-old Mahmoud Charr has 38 fights and 34 wins (20 by knockout).
