The most successful lady in the history of Italian skiing Deborah Compagnoni will open the ski season in Bansko on December 16, the Pirin resort announced. The three-time Olympic champion in alpine skiing is coming at the invitation of the concessionaire of the ski area Yulen, thus observing the 20-year tradition of a skiing legend to visit the best Bulgarian ski resort for the opening of the season.
In her rich career, Compagnoni won gold medals at three consecutive Winter Olympics - Albertville 92 (super-G), Lillehammer 94 (giant slalom) and Nagano 98 (giant slalom). She also won silver in the slalom at the Games in Japan. The Italian also has 3 titles from world championships - Sierra Nevada 96 (giant slalom), Sestriere 97 (giant slalom and slalom). From 1992 to 1998 the all-rounder has also won 16 World Cup starts (13 giant slalom, 2 super-G and 1 slalom). Alongside Compagnoni in Bansko on December 16 will be 5-time World Cup winner Marc Girardelli.
