Bulgaria's Danube Limes made it into Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2024's list of best value destinations. The Limes are a string of fortified settlements that once traced the extent of the Roman Empire, stretching across much of Central and into Eastern Europe.

Lonely Planet's article on the Limes reads: "While Unesco protection [for the Danube Limes] would extend across four countries, the Bulgarian stretch might be the most impressive – and since many of the sites can be explored by bike on a path that follows the Danube to the Black Sea, anyone can access it for free".

The path in question is the Dunav Ultra trail that goes for 740 km between Kudelin, in Bulgaria's far northwest, to the shores of Durankulak Beach on the Black Sea.

Lonely Planet points out that while Bulgaria remains one of Europe's least-visited cycling destinations, the Dunav Ultra route is on a mission to change that by championing sustainable ecotourism, as it promises "a truly unique experience – a perfect destination for an unforgettable bikepacking odyssey".

A highlight of Bulgaria's Danube Limes is the medieval castle Baba Vida, built atop the Roman fortress of Bononia, near Vidin. Further east, at Ruse, archaeological work is ongoing at the Roman naval base of Sexaginta Prista (Port of 60 Ships).
