Bulgaria’s Sports Ministry is introducing funding for training and remuneration for medal winners of the 24th Summer Deaflympics held in 2022 and their coaches under its 2024 Sports Development Programme for people with disabilities.

“In this way, the State gives hard-of-hearing athletes the opportunity to fully prepare for the 2025 Deaflympics Games in Tokyo,“ Sports Minister Dimitar Iliev said.

A total of BGN 1.92 million of the Ministry’s budget will be allocated for the implementation of the programme.

The maximum personal monthly allowances for training and rehabilitation of Paralympians will increase from BGN 3,000 to BGN 3,800 as of 2024, which will make Paralympians’ allowances equal to those of their able-bodied counterparts. Such funding will be granted to Paralympians who have secured a berth for the Olympics.

The remuneration of coaches and their teams will increase by 15%. The coaches can receive up to BGN 3,900 per month, compared to the present cap of BGN 3,400.

The main objective of the programme is to provide better conditions for people with disabilities, and opportunities for adapted physical activity, practicing sports, and participation in sports events and competitions. The programme also provides support for the process of training Bulgarian elite athletes with disabilities for international sports competitions and the Paralympics.
