Bulgaria at the Olympics: Ivaylo Ivanov Makes
Impressive Start in Judo Event but
Drops at Round of 16

Tokyo, July 27 (BTA special correspondent Dimiter Velyov) - Bulgarian Ivaylo Ivanov had an impressive start in the judo event of the Tokyo Games on July 27 but lost his second bout and dropped in the Round of 16 later in the day.

In his first match in the 81 kg weight class, the 27-year-old Bulgarian judoka needed only 28 seconds to beat pan-American vice champion Emmanuel Lucenti of Argentina. He then lost to Sharofiddin Boltaboev of Uzbekistan.

Ivanov said he would be moving in the higher weight class next season. "I am changing the weight class, going up to 90 kg. The reason is that for 11 years I have been in the 81 kg and I've had to lose weight too often, which has been too much. Losing weight makes me lose motivation from time to time because it is exhausting.I have had to shed 9-10 kg and that was long years," he said.

He plans to be in the 90 kg weight class for the European judo championships in Sofia in April 2022. LN/
