A total of 2,823 occupational accidents were reported in 2024, according to the latest data from the National Social Security Institute (NSSI). Of those, 2,376 occurred at the workplace, while 447 took place during commutes to and from work.

There were 64 fatal work accidents, with 53 occurring at the workplace. Four of the victims were women and 60 were men.

The total number of calendar days lost was 164,478, with 137,063 hours lost due to an accident at work, according to the NSSI calculations.

The sector with the highest number of occupational accidents was retail trade, excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles, with 299 cases, followed by land transport with 216 cases and public administration with 190 cases.

Several sectors had only one incident each, including computer equipment repair, legal and accounting services, radio and television activities, and information services.

The transport sector accounted for the most calendar days lost, totalling 15,005, followed by retail trade with 11,940 days, and public administration with 11,160 days.

Construction recorded the highest number of fatalities, with seven deaths, all of which were men who died at their workplace.

In 2024, no people injured in a work-related accident acquired disability.

Sofia had the highest number of work-related accidents, with 1,093 total accidents, 873 of which took place at the workplace. Twenty-two people died in accidents there, 17 of them at work.

In Plovdiv, 304 work-related accidents were reported, 274 of which happened at the workplace. Varna recorded 197 accidents, with 162 occurring at work.

The latest accident took place on Tuesday, when a fire broke out at a plant in Panagyurishte (Central Bulgaria), leading to the death of a long-serving employee.
