Caretaker Tourism Minister Evtim Miloshev said on Saturday in a Bulgarian National Television interview that there is a labour shortage in the tourism industry in Bulgaria and that businesses are looking for foreign workers, especially from third countries such as Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, India. Miloshev was adamant that the labour shortage should not change the labour market and foreign workers should not displace Bulgarians and take away their job positions.
Miloshev added during his first days in office he held meetings with businesses and became familiar with their problems and expectations.
A bill proposing changes to the Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria Act has been submitted to the National Assembly, said the caretaker Minister of Tourism, and appealed to the deputies to adopt it in the short time left in the current Parliament. He explained that the changes will enable the short-term 90-day work visas of third-country nationals to be renewed without the workers having to leave the country.
There are also rules that are not only national, but also European, he explained. Borders cannot just be opened because then it becomes a legal migration channel. National security must be taken into account, as well as the fact that we are a European country and are part of the Schengen area, albeit partially, added the Minister.
"The first task of the caretaker government is to organize fair elections, my first task as caretaker Minister of Tourism is to welcome the summer tourist season," Miloshev said. He added that this is a very big responsibility, because according to the Ministry's estimates, the summer tourist season represents 70% of tourism in Bulgaria.
Next week, meetings will begin on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast with local authorities and businesses, Miloshev said, adding a good summer tourist season is expected.
