The National Company Railway Infrastructure and the BDZ railway operator are severely understaffed, with the former needing some 1,260 hires and the latter some 1,100, Transport Minister Georgi Gvozdeikov said here Tuesday. He was speaking during the statutory meeting of the Federation of Transport Trade Unions in Sofia.

In the past year, some 800 people left each of the two companies. "Measures need to be taken as a matter of emergency to improve working conditions in the sector. One of the right steps is modernization," said the Minister adding that decent pay also needs to be provided.

BDZ and Railway Infrastructure are major employers with some 20,000 workers.

The Minister believes that the geopolitical situation provides opportunities for huge investment in transport infrastructure. "We are working hard with Greece and Romania to build new infrastructure for automobile and railway transport, and connections with ports and airports," added Gvozdeikov.
