Stanka Zlateva was unanimously elected as the president of the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation (BWF) at the BWF assembly in Varna on Tuesday. A total of 120 clubs out of 125 affiliated with the organization were represented at the event.
The candidates for the position were Grisha Ganchev, Hristo Marinov, and Dimitar Dzhamov. Ganchev, who is a former BWF president and current member of the BFA Board of Directors, withdrew his candidacy and called on the federation members to vote for Dzhamov. Outgoing president Marinov did the same. In the end, Dzhamov, who succeeded Ganchev as president in 1995 and led the federation until 1997, also withdrew and supported Zlateva’s candidacy. Thus, Zlateva remained the sole candidate and won unanimously.
Stanka Zlateva is the most successful Bulgarian wrestler. She is a two-time Olympic silver medallist, five-time world champion, and six-time European champion. She is the first woman in history to head BWF.
