Three of the men who committed violent acts against gendarmes during Sunday night's protest in Bucharest's Old Town have been detained by prosecutors. The case will be presented in court with a proposal for pre-trial detention, Agerpres reports.

"From the evidence gathered, it has been established that on the night of March 9-10, 2025, the three men, aged 43, 48 and 50, committed violent acts targeting gendarmes stationed in the Old Town on the occasion of the protests in front of the Central Election Bureau," the media outlet quoted the police as saying.

The three men have been charged with disturbing public order.

Meanwhile, the hearings of the MPs from the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR) involved in the protest are already underway at the Romanian Prosecutor General's Office.

On Sunday, March 9, Romania's Central Election Bureau rejected the candidacy of Calin Georgescu in the presidential elections. The decision caused chaos and unrest in Bucharest. Scenes of violence also took place in the Old Town, where demonstrators threw stones and bottles at police and journalists, set fire to bushes and garbage bins, and overturned a car belonging to the Romanian television station Digi24.
