site.btaNational Theatre's "Merchant of Venice" Wins Ikar Award for Best Play
The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, a production of the National Theatre in Sofia, directed by Yavor Gardev, was named Best Play at the National Ikar Awards for Performing Arts, held at the National Theatre on Thursday.
Samuel Finzi won the Best Leading Actor Award for his role in The Merchant of Venice, and Albena Pavlova was honoured as Best Leading Actress for her part in Mother Courage and Her Children, based on the play by Bertolt Brecht, a production of Sofia's Theatre of Satire, directed by Stoyan Radev.
Actor Yavor Milushev was awarded for his remarkable contribution to Bulgarian theatre. He received the Badge of Honour of the President of Bulgaria.
Zafir Radjab was named Best Director. Leonid Yovchev is Best Supporting Actor, and Bilyana Georgieva is Best Supporting Actress.
The Ikar Awards are conferred annually by the Union of Bulgarian Actors. Thursday's ceremony coincided with World Theatre Day.
Culture Minister Marian Bachev presented accolades on behalf of his ministry. They went to the National Theatre, recognized as Best Drama Theatre, and the State Puppet Theatre in Plovdiv, named Best Puppet Theatre.
Multi-skilled artist Emi Velkova received a distinction from the Circus Artists Association.
