The National Museum of Military History (NMMH) in Sofia is opening an exhibition on Thursday that will showcase some of the most fascinating items added to its collection in 2024. Titled Memory for the Future, the exhibition is a sign of gratitude to the NMMH donors, including heirs to individuals who played a role in Bulgarian history, as well as others who simply chose to share items from their personal collections, according to a press release by the NMMH. There are also exhibits provided by the Ministry of Defence and other institutions, and items purchased by the museum.
The exhibition features a selection of the 800 cultural assets the Museum received in 2024. Spanning a period of more than 140 years, these include military uniforms of a General Staff colonel and of an artillery officer of the same rank from 1897, as well as an 1877 Order of the Star of Romania, offering a glimpse into the early years of building the Bulgarian state and the armed forces after liberation from Ottoman Turkish rule. The exhibits also include personal belongings and documents of a military doctor, who served in the Balkan Wars and World War I, a Zeiss Ikon camera from the 1930s, a Tesla Trio 420U radio from the 1950s, photographs of Bulgarian Armed Forces missions abroad, decorations, firearms and uniforms. Viewers will also be able to see a portable dressing station and a mobile X-ray unit.
During the exhibition’s opening on January 30, donors will receive certificates and free tickets for a year's admission to the NMMH and its branches.
