An initiative committee officially launched a postage stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Bulgarian composer and conductor Konstantin Iliev, the Ministry of Culture said on Thursday. The members of the committee were caretaker Culture Minister Nayden Todorov, Deputy Transport Minister Dimitar Nedyalkov, National Academy of Arts Rector Prof. Georgi Yankov, the Director of the Bulgarian Cultural Institute in Berlin, Borislav Petranov, artist Stoyan Dechev, and others.
During the ceremony, Dechev said that the world stages are full of wonderful Bulgarian performers, conductors, and musicians, and Konstantin Iliev is still well-known today. "Our convertible currency is art, especially music," he added. Dechev also expressed hope that the stamp would be successful not only among philatelists but also within the artistic community.
Minister Todorov said that Konstantin Iliev is one of the people without whom Bulgarian music would not be the same. "In his short life, he did a lot for Bulgaria. Today, some of our greatest conductors are his students," Todorov noted.
