A project of Kardzhali Municipality for the restoration and conservation of Perperikon, the ancient Thracian city in the Eastern Rhodopi Mountains, is among six projects competing in the national Building of the Year competition in 2024, said the programme's official website on Tuesday.

The competition is held under the auspices of the Regional Development and Public Works Ministry. The projects represent key objects of the country's natural and cultural heritage, restored and socialized through European investments, aiming not only to preserve the objects, but also to support their popularization and their transformation into attractive tourist destinations in Bulgaria.

The project for the restoration and conservation of the ancient city of Perperikon aims to create conditions for the development of competitive tourist attractions in Kardzhali Municipality and be conducive to diversifying local and regional tourist products. In addition to the conservation and restoration of archaeological sites on the Acropolis and in the southern quarter, Perperikon has artistic lighting, walkways and panoramic platforms, as well as video surveillance.

The other projects, which have been financed under the Operational Programme Development of the Regions 2014-2020 and will compete for the audience award in the competition, include the construction of tourist infrastructure for the Valley of the Thracian Kings in Kardzhali, the Dimitar Hadzhivasilev Commercial High School in Svishtov, the House of Culture in Gotse Delchev; the Ethnographic Open Air Museum Etar in Gabrovo and the St Cyril and Methodius Church in Burgas.

The voting for the Building of the Year contest will end on December 16. The official award ceremony will be held on December 17.
